Portable desiccant dehumidifiers are systems that allow for the quick removal of water vapor and excess humidity from the air.  While there are many different types of models available on the market today, one of the more popular portable models available is that of a desiccant dehumidifier.  These systems utilize a hygroscopic moisture absorption material to absorb water from the air. Typically these materials will be silica gel or lithium chloride. The unit will draw air in using a series of fans and the moisture will be trapped within the rotating absorbent wheel within the unit. Once the absorbent wheel has absorbed a high quantity of water it then rotates slowly and the saturated area is heated with an  electric heater. In doing so the heater will be able to vaporize the water and dispense it out as warm humid air. Typically this air is carried outside the target area through a series of tubes.

A portable desiccant dehumidifier can be a fantastic tool to allow you to dry and control humidity in an area. Units such as the Phoenix 1200 portable desiccant dehumidifier are fantastic for jobs that require and efficiently powered system that can run for hours on end.  These systems are also perfect for more confined areas such as attics and crawl spaces. Regardless of the level of humidity in the air, these devices can quickly and efficiently remove excess amounts of water vapor at an extremely rapid pace. The Phoenix 1200 model for example has the capability of removing 344 pints of water per day. This equates to 43 gallons of water that the device can quickly and effortlessly eliminate from the airborne environment within a room or building.

Portable desiccant dehumidifiers are heavily used on job sites where it may not be safe to position a conventional gas heater. If there are any vapors in the air that will cause a hazard during the use of a flame heater, a desiccant unit becomes the clear choice. In limited access scenarios, these portable devices with their small footprint make them the go to unit. Before choosing a solution that is right for you is important to understand the environment and not exactly what you are dealing with. Some of the most basic considerations for humidity problems can be broken down into a few decision questions. Firstly, you have to understand what the extent of the humidity in the area may be. If you can measure the current water vapor level in the air you can then choose the best possible unit for your needs. Next, how big is the space that you are going to be working with? Will you need more than one unit? Lastly, are you working in a building that is occupied or will it be empty during this process? Once you understand the answers to these questions you can then find which type of model is most appropriate for your needs.  The Phoenix 1200 and D385 are two portable desiccant dehumidifier models that are uniquely suited for applications such as this.
