Desiccator…Do You Really Mean Dehumidifier

The term desiccator is used by many people when they actually mean dehumidifier.   The term desiccator is actually more commonly used in the scientific community where it refers to an air tight container that has a special drying agent in the bottom of it to keep the humidity inside the container low.  This is different then what a dehumidifier is doing by actually pulling air into the unit, drying the air and then exhausting it back out into the wet environment, thus drying the air in the room(s) it is located in.

Besides the term desiccator many people also use the term humidifier instead of dehumidifier.  This is incorrect since a humidifier actually puts water into the air while a dehumidifier removes the moisture from the air.  Knowing the differences between a desiccator, humidifier, and dehumidifier can help you when you are searching for a piece of equipment to buy.

Portable Fans

If you are in the market to buy portable fans then you will need to do your homework on them first.  Since there are so many different styles, models, and manufacturers it is best to know exactly what you will be wanting the unit to do and then go find one with your specifications.

First have a plan for where the portable fans are going, how they are going to be used, if there is enough electricity in the area to operate them, and where you are going to store them when not in use.  Once you have a basic idea of the type of unit you are looking for then you can start shopping.

Start shopping by looking for all the models that give you the required cfm of air you are looking for and the desired amp load.  Once you have narrowed down your selections to a few then you can choose from the different options and price.  Some options you may not have even thought about but come in handy are things like being able to daisy chain units together, ground fault circuit interruption (GFCI) protection, onboard circuit breaker, roto-molded plastic housing, and a 20 foot long electrical cord.  Selecting portable fans with all or some of these features will give your units more flexibility in what you can  do with them.  So think about the different options and see what is out there before purchasing.  Buying the right equipment the first time is a lot better than having a piece of equipment you are not happy with.

Finding the Best Buy Dehumidifier

If you are looking for the best buy dehumidifier on the market today, you may already have realized that there are many choices.  These units come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.  However choosing the one that will perform up to your expectations should be your ultimate goal.  Solving the humidity problem in an area should not be that difficult if you have the right equipment on hand to properly do the job.  So this blog post will help you pick out the best buy dehumidifier that is right for your situation.

First you will need to make sure the equipment is sized properly to the air space you want dried.  The equipment should be able to handle the entire volume of air in a space 3-5 times per hour in a real damp environment.  After you have sized it correctly then you will want to have a few additional features on your unit.  Units with automatic pump outs on them are a huge help to you.  This way when the unit collects enough water it will pump it out down a drain, instead of you having to empty a bucket.   Another great feature is a humidistat.  This device will tell the unit when it reaches a predetermined humidity level to turn on/off.   This will cause the unit to run less thus saving you some money on your electric bill.

So doing a little homework on the differences of these units before you purchase one will help you find the best buy dehumidifier.

Dehumidifier Ratings

Dehumidifiers are appliances used daily in many households. They are used for regulating the level of moisture inside the home. Dehumidifiers dry damp air in the house by extracting moisture from the air. You can find a wide range of dehumidifiers on the market today, but at some dehumidifier ratings first could save you a lot of heart ache later.

Before purchasing a home dehumidifier you may want to take a second to step back and head online to read consumer dehumidifier ratings for the device options you have in mind. The market is oversaturated with home dehumidifiers that all promise to provide you with clean dry air.  Even though each manufacturer would like you to believe that you are getting the best device not every product performs the same. Thus, you may be curious as to where you should turn for information.

The best place to look is online at blogs, company forums, and consumer websites. After all, the best way to find out what type of home dehumidifier works the best is to read the feedback of other people who have invested in the device. People tend to be unbiased when they post dehumidifier ratings on a website, blog, or forum and generally you will get much more of an honest idea of what they are capable or instead of what the company wants you to believe.
The method of rating a dehumidifier is to assess how much water it can pull from a certain amount of cubic feet of air in 24 hours. There are dehumidifiers that can pull gallons from a whole house thus reducing the humidity, whereas others would need a smaller space like a closet in order to have any effect. The range of capacities and sizes is great. So make sure to do your homework before purchasing a unit so that it will give you years of great service.

Removing Confusion When Buying a Swimming Pool Dehumidifier

Pool dehumidifier but also for libraries, museums, warehouses, garages, storage buildings, and more

swimming pool dehumidifier

Buying a swimming pool dehumidifier can be confusing.  There are many models, manufacturers, and prices.  So which one will work best for your situation?  Which one will cost you the least to operate long term?  Which one will have years of dependable service?  These are all good questions and will need to be thought about before purchasing one.  However, most people do not know how a dehumidifier works or how to properly size a unit to your specific needs.  This is where a qualified distributor comes in handy.

A distributor ought to be able to help you make a smart equipment purchasing decision.  Many distributors will let you talk with an engineer and have them walk through the different steps of sizing the equipment properly with the engineer before purchasing.  Besides just needing a swimming pool dehumidifier you may also need additional equipment such as an exhaust fan.  This will put a slight negative on the pool room and will help eliminate chlorine smells and prevent moisture from being driven into the structure of the pool room.

So before you purchase any equipment for an indoor pool make sure to talk with a qualified distributor of pool dehumidifiers and their engineer.  This will insure that you save money by having the correct equipment for your space.

Air Dryers

Phoenix 1200 Portable Desiccant DehumidifierAir dryers or dehumidifiers can be useful for many applications where moisture is a problem.  Having been in the drying industry since 1992, I have seen many different applications for these units.  So I thought I would list a few of them to show the wide variety of applications they function well in.

First is obviously water damage situations.  Over the years I have dried 10 story office buildings, museums, chemical plants, The Toyota Center (where the Houston Rockets play), dog food manufacturing plants, historical homes, brand new homes, and many other places due to busted pipes or rising flood waters.  However these are not the only times an air dryer is needed.

I have also sold units to car racing teams who need to control humidity while painting a car or storing tools. Then there was the health food bar manufacturer that needed low humidity so his building wouldn’t sweat when large batches of product came out of a hot oven into a cold room.  Indoor pools in homes, hotels, and gyms need specialized knowledge of dehumidifiers to ensure the unit they buy will function the way they want it to for a long time.  There was also a sugar manufacturer that needed rail cars dehumidified before they pumped sugar into them.  This way the sugar would stay in granular form during transport and not be a big solid block.  Basements, whether in a home or an office always need some kind of humidity control and we have helped many people with these issues.

So the next time you have a humidity problem, remember there are people that can help you solve those issues with free consultations.

Getting the Most Out of Your Basement

A basement dehumidifier is not an appliance that you think about often and this is the way it should be.  These units are designed for years of use with minimal maintenance and keep your area free of mold, mildew and unpleasant odors associated with high humidity.  High humidity in a basement can have damaging affects on the rest of the home if gone unchecked.  The excess moisture can ruin wood subfloors, hardwood floors, household furniture, walls, and more.  The good news is this can all be prevented with a basement dehumidifier.

Before you purchase a unit for the area though there are some things to know so that the unit can perform up to your expectations.  You should buy a unit that will process all the air in the space 2-3 times per hour and has a humidistat on it.  This way when the humidity is the highest the unit will be able to process it properly and when the humidity is low the unit will shut itself off.  Another good feature to have is an automatic pump out.  The water will be collected within the unit and then when the reservoir is full it will be pumped out to a drain or sump pump.  The good thing about a pump is that the unit doesn’t need to be located close to a drain, you can just run the line from the pump to the drain.

So when you are in the market for a basement dehumidifier make sure to look these features in a unit.  If you are unsure on how to properly size the unit to your particular air space then ask the company you buy the unit from to do this part for you.  This will ensure you get this step right the first time.

Seed Drying and Storage with Desiccant Dehumidifiers

Desiccant dehumidifiers are the drying unit of choice for most companies in the business of seed drying or storage.  These units are very energy efficient and can control the humidity in large spaces.  Seeds can be stored in a low humidity environment for many different reasons.  They may be going to be used in research projects at a later date, or stored til planting time and then grown for human consumption.

Without a desiccant dehumidifier the seeds would be exposed to high levels of moisture which would have damaging affects to the seeds and their ability to be used at a future date.  Depending on the future use of the seed different moisture content levels will need to be achieved.  Generally speaking though the lower the moisture content the longer the seed life and the longer it can be stored.  Seed drying should be carried out within 24 hours of harvesting for best results and once the drying is complete then they can be stored until ready for use.

There are many different methods of seed drying such as incubators, drying cabinets, charcoal drying, and desiccant dehumidifiers.  One of the most efficient and versatile methods though in seed drying is the use of desiccant dehumidifiers.  These units can function efficiently in cool conditions as well as warm conditions.  Then when it comes to seed storage the best way to control the humidity in the storage area will be with a desiccant dehumidifier.  Usually this can be accomplished easily with a humidistat installed on the dehumidifier so that it can come on and off as needed.

So when looking to upgrade or expand your seed drying or storage facility consider purchasing a desiccant dehumidifier.

Installing a Swimming Pool Dehumidifier

Having a swimming pool dehumidifier in your indoor pool area may not seem as exciting as having a diving board or a hot tub but it can be more necessary for the comfort of the occupants of the room.  It can also help prevent rust, decay, or even mold from forming and destroying the beauty and function the room was intended for.  They can also be hidden from view in an equipment closet and have duct work to and from the unit to keep the area at a comfortable and safe humidity level.

However, a swimming pool dehumidifier is only effective if it is sized correctly to the space that you want controlled.  Don’t trust a dehumidifier salesman that just ask for the amount of water in the pool and then tries to sale you a unit based on that.  It is infinitely more complicated than that and usually requires the services of an engineer.   However, some equipment distributors will let you talk with an engineer for free to make sure that you get the proper equipment.  Having a dehumidifier may not be the only thing that you need either.  You may also need an exhaust fan to put a slight amount of negative pressure on the area.  This will help with removing several pounds of moisture per hour and help reduce or eliminate the chlorine smell in the area.

When you put it all together (swimming pool dehumidifier and exhaust fan) and have it all properly sized to the air space in the room then you should be able to enjoy the space for years to come.

Installing A Basement Dehumidifier

A basement dehumidifier is probably not high on your list of things you want for Christmas, but it should be high on your                                                                                              Basement dehumidifier

list of home appliances that you need. By keeping the moisture levels low you will be able to enjoy your basement, rather than it being a source of agony for you. Without a way to control the moisture it will be difficult for you to store things there or to want to even spend time there. Excessive moisture can cause mold and mildew growth and if left unattended would ruin things that were in this part of your house.

If you are choosing a refrigerant style basement dehumidifier make sure that the area it will be used in will be above 70 degrees when you need dehumidification to occur. If it is not at or above 70 when the humidity is high then the refrigerant style unit will not work efficiently and may not be able to accomplish what you want it to. If this is going to be a problem then you can always go with a desiccant style unit. These units do not take the water out in the form of a liquid and so they are not susceptible to freezing like a refrigerant unit with coils would be. A desiccant unit will need to vented to the outside though. The moisture laden air will have to be ducted to the outside through a window or something more permanent like a dryer vent. These style units can also be very energy efficient.

So when you are looking for a basement dehumidifier make sure to explore all your options to see which unit will work the best for you before purchasing.
